All of us in Chapel Hill are focused on what is going to happen in Detroit this weekend as well we should. Final Four, UNC it is dominating our thought. We all have a common goal and 2 Carolina wins will enable us to accomplish that goal. As a town, we combine all our energy and become part of the team, we become part of all the hard work and sacrifices the players and coaches have been making all year. We expect too much from them. We expect everything from them. We expect these kids to deliver to us this feeling that we can't or don't even try to provide for ourselves. During the year we expect our own children to deliver that feeling to us.
When was it that we lost the ability to provide that feeling for ourselves? Or even try ?
Is it not a suprise that as a child when we all could and did provide that feeling for ourselves without even knowing it, excercise and diet played a big part. We ran and played for hours, Mom made sure we were eating "right", our mind was challenged daily by our teachers, in more ways than one in some cases.
Now we use our daily life demands to ignore these essential life requirements. We schedule our lives with a host of demands and obligations that are anything but essential. What are they ? Most revolve around when you get in your car, for the most part unless you are going to work, going grocery shopping, going to exchange ideas with friends or taking someone to the hospital the time you are spending in your car is wasted, the hours spent in front of the computer looking at nothing are wasted too, the weekly or more frequent trips to the mall, or Target aren't doing anything for us either.
Why do we choose to hide behind all of our "things to do" ? Do we really have to be a taxi for our 14 year old kids, have we taught them nothing that we can't expect them to find a way to get from point a to point b. Is that $500 bike we bought them and the $120 Nikes not help enough in that regard. Judging by the emptiness in our beautiful parks it seems that not only are we not providing the essentials for ourselves but we aren't providing the essential of excercise for our children either. It seems like we are happier having them in front of the computer than just making them do the incredibly difficult chore of "going out to play". Are we providing any better for our children in the area of diet ? You know we aren't.
The easiest. essential requirements aren't coming close to being met yet most of us are up before sunrise and don't go to sleep until almost midnight and in that span we aren't able to accomplish a little physical activity for ourselves and prepare something healthy to eat. We need to stop talking about getting into shape and eating better we need to just do it.
Go Heels!!! and Let's go too ! We can make it happen. Excercise a little change our diet a little and improve our lives to the point we just might be able to provide "that" feeling for ourselves again.
